There are 36 muscles that attach to the pelvis including the abdominal muscles, muscles of the back, muscles of the hip and thighs, the muscles of the pelvic floor, and even the latissimus dorsi which moves the arm. The muscles of the pelvic floor support your organs and control urinary, sexual, and bowel functions.
Men and women can suffer from issues related to the pelvic floor muscles. Pregnancy, childbirth, constipation, chronic breathing problems or coughing, abdominal or pelvic surgeries, injuries, and trauma can all affect proper functioning of this system.
Whether you have pain, incontinence, or prolapse, there is physical therapy for that. There is more to treating pelvic dysfunction than doing Kegel exercises. There are providers who specialize in treating this area, including myself.
